Crew members from the 99th Bombardment Wing of Strategic Air Command at Westover Air Force Base, Massachusetts, serving in the 346th and 348th Bombardment Squadrons, lost their lives during a training mission over Lake Michigan on January 7, 1971. They were Lt. Col. Wm B. Lemmon, Lt. Col. John M. Simonfy, Jr., Major Gerald W. Black, Major Donald F. Rousseau, Capt. John E. Weaver, Jr., Capt. Joel G. Hirsch, 1st Lt. Douglas Bachman, 1st Lt. Dennis D. Ferguson, and Technical Sergeant Jerry M. Achey.
