Jeremiah Morgan, born in the Cherokee Nation, Alabama, in 1818 and dead in Morgan Territory, California, in 1906, traveled to California gold country in 1849 and soon found he could earn more by hunting wild game to feed miners than by hunting gold ore. He returned to an Iowa farm, and in April 1853 his family journeyed to California by wagon train. By September he had built a home and begun farming one hundred sixty acres in Ignacio Valley. While hunting, he came upon forested wilderness on the east flank of Mount Diablo, which he called “the morning side of the mountain.” By October 1857 he had claimed a large block of land, erected a redwood barn, granary, and two-story house a mile north of this spot, and brought his family to the place later named Morgan Territory in his honor. He registered the brand JM in August 1858 and began raising horses, cattle, sheep, and pigs. He also hunted deer, grizzly bear, and elk to support his wife Sarah Ellis Morgan and their sixteen children. After Sarah died in 1869, he married Louisa Riggs and had one more child. He served as a witness for many settlers’ claims and strongly supported the one-room Morgan Territory School. In 1989, Save Mount Diablo acquired the six hundred thirty-one-acre Morgan Ranch for Mount Diablo State Park, and this site, the twenty-acre “red corral” property, was similarly acquired in 2002.
