The earliest known graves in this burial ground are those of Elisha Whitley and Henry McCray, who were killed by hostile Indians in 1872, and Isaac Galbreath, who died in 1874 after being killed by Indians at age seventeen. Also interred here is his father, Thomas Galbreath, a Texas Ranger and veteran of the Mexican War. The town of Devine was established in 1881 when a line of the International and Great Northern Railroad was completed from San Antonio to Laredo, and it was named for Judge Thomas J. Devine, attorney for the railroad company. J.M. Bright, owner of land platted for the townsite, is buried here. In 1891 P.C. Hattox conveyed the original 6.5 acres at this site for designation as Evergreen Cemetery, and a cemetery association formed that same year to sell lots and direct volunteer clean-up days. Additional property was later acquired for expansion, and after reorganization in the 1960s, the association arranged for voluntary donations to maintain the grounds.
