The Federal Attack on Hood’s Corps
Military
2
On May 25, 1864, Brig. Gen. J.W. Geary’s 2d division of the 20th A.C. [US], deployed in dense woods to the northwest, advanced toward this ridge at New Hope Ch. at 5 p.m., supported on its right by Williams’ 1st division and on its left by Butterfield's 3d division, with the corps front astride this road. Repeated assaults on Hood’s corps [CS], posted on this ridge with Stovall’s brigade on the left, Clayton’s in the center, and Baker’s on the right, failed to dislodge it after several hours of fighting. Reinforced 20th corps assaults on May 26 were likewise devoid of results.
