Chittenden Memorial Bridge spans the Yellowstone River in Yellowstone National Park near the Upper Yellowstone Falls, linking the Grand Loop Road with the south rim road to major canyon viewpoints. The first bridge on this site was built in 1903 by Captain Hiram M. Chittenden, whose elegant single-arch design was meant to fit the dramatic landscape while opening access to the canyon’s previously hard-to-reach right bank, including Artist Point. Its construction was difficult and dangerous, requiring continuous concrete work by 150 men over 74 hours. The original bridge was demolished in 1961 and replaced by the present crossing, opened in 1963.
