The county’s first courthouse, probably built of logs, stood by 1692. The earliest known court minutes date from 1706. In 1735 a second courthouse was built facing Market Street. In 1817 the courthouse was expanded for $772,582. In 1819 an election defeated moving the county seat. In 1908 a main entrance was added facing Broadway.
