On June 10, 1864, the 4th A.C. moved from Mars Hill Ch. to a position along this road facing south toward Pine Mountain, the highest point between Lost and Kennesaw Mountains. The 14th A.C. was on the left and the 20th on the right. Pine Mountain was fortified and held as an outpost of the main Confederate line 1.25 miles south from June 5 to 15, the line extending from Lost Mountain to Brushy Mountain. On June 14, while Generals Johnston, Hardee, and Polk were observing Federal lines from Pine Mountain, batteries of the 4th and 20th Corps fired on them, and Gen. Leonidas Polk was killed by a shell.
