Originally conceived as a photo-reconnaissance aircraft, the U-2 proved ideal for many other high-altitude missions. Built by Lockheed Aircraft Corporation, it first flew on 1 August 1955. Operating above 70,660 feet and above 400 knots, with an 80-foot wingspan and a length of 49.7 feet, it is dedicated to the select men and women who supported, maintained, and flew it as it ventured Toward The Unknown.
