Scapegoat Wilderness is a protected backcountry in western Montana spanning 239,936 acres in the Helena–Lewis and Clark and Lolo National Forests. Established by Congress in 1972, it is part of the Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex and connects with adjoining wilderness areas. Its terrain ranges from about 5,000 feet to more than 9,000 feet, with Red Mountain the highest point and the Chinese Wall among its most dramatic landmarks. Forests, lakes, and the headwaters of the Blackfoot River support abundant wildlife and fish. Managed under the 1964 Wilderness Act, it allows only nonmotorized recreation, including hiking, horse packing, fishing, camping, and seasonal hunting.
