The Chisholm Trail
Transportation
4
Between 1867 and 1876 more than two million Texas Longhorns were driven north past this area to Kansas railroad towns for shipment east. At Slate Creek Crossing five miles northeast, a trading post established in 1869 was the first building in Sumner County. After the trail was closed to cattle, many of the pioneers who settled the western part of the county came over it.
