Ferrum, ten miles southwest, was named for nearby iron mines. Ferrum College was established by the Virginia Conference of the Methodist Church in 1913 through the influence of its Woman’s Society of Christian Service. After years of service in secondary education, it became exclusively a junior college in 1955.
