The Durham Museum in downtown Omaha occupies the city’s former Union Station and preserves the history of the American West while presenting broader exhibitions through national partnerships. Its home became available when Union Pacific closed the station in 1971 after the reorganization of passenger rail service, and the station was donated to Omaha in 1973 for use as the Western Heritage Museum. A major renovation in the mid-1990s, largely funded by Charles and Margre Durham, led to its later renaming.
