Lock 24 North on the Miami and Erie Canal was an original rare limestone lock completed in 1845 at Delphos, where wooden lock gates stood beside a spillway whose water power was used by the Hinde-Dauch paper mill. Boats passing through the lock were secured by guide ropes, which wore grooves into the limestone. The first canal boat passed through section 10, now Delphos, on July 4th 1845. In 1848, Miami Indians removed from their homes in Ohio and Indiana traveled south by boat through Lock 24 on their way to Cincinnati. In 1906, the last toll-paying canal boat, The Marguerite, which had been permanently moored in Delphos, sank; it was salvaged in 1987 and is on display at the Canal Commission Museum in Delphos. Each white oak gate weighed 7,000 pounds, with a handle length of 22 feet, a width of 15 feet, and a lock length of 90 feet.
