Bodie Island Lighthouse stands on North Carolina’s Outer Banks near the northern entrance to Cape Hatteras National Seashore. Completed in 1872 as the third lighthouse for this hazardous coast, it replaced two earlier Pea Island towers, one abandoned because of a poor foundation and the other destroyed in 1861 by retreating Confederate troops. The present brick tower is notable as one of the few tall brick lighthouse towers still standing in the United States and for retaining its original first-order Fresnel lens. Automated in 1932 and fully so by 1940, it was restored and reopened for climbs in 2013, reflecting its enduring role along the Graveyard of the Atlantic.
