Memorial Hospital was erected in 1853 by E. R. Hord, a State Representative and U.S. Congressman. Stone for its 28-inch walls was hauled by ox-teams, and its beams arrived by boat and were landed at a nearby dock. During the Civil War, the building served as military headquarters.
