In September 1905, the Robert E. Lee Chapter of the Daughters of the Confederacy, No. 324, erected this tribute to Confederate dead. Its inscription honors those buried in humble graves as martyrs of a fallen cause and calls on pilgrims to pause before a marble column, recalling the years 1861–65.
