On July 9, Colonel Nathan Bedford Forrest's brigade passed here en route to join additional units before advancing on the Federal garrison and stores at Murfreesboro. Leaving Chattanooga, the brigade consisted of the 8th Texas Cavalry, the 2nd Georgia Cavalry, Woodward's Kentucky Cavalry Battalion, and a headquarters unit of 20 men commanded by Captain William Forrest. Further additions to its strength were to join at McMinnville.
