Keeley Creek Natural Area is a protected tract in northeastern Minnesota’s Superior National Forest, in Stony River Township, Lake County. Managed by the United States Department of Agriculture Forest Service, it has been protected since 1942 as a Research Natural Area and was included in a larger National Natural Landmark designation in 1980. The area preserves an undisturbed mixed pine and black spruce forest, with rare mature jack pine stands and important upland bogs. Its native conifer forests support wildlife including white-tailed deer, snowshoe rabbit, and ruffed grouse, and they demonstrate how periodic fire sustains northern forest ecology by aiding seed germination and canopy opening.
