John Blair, who lived from 1766 to 1832, was a pioneer farmer, merchant, and public servant, an advocate of good roads, a promoter of the Pennsylvania Canal and Allegheny Portage Railroad, and the foremost citizen of his time in what is now Blair County. When the county was formed on February 26th, 1846, it was given his name.
