Spirit Mountain, a city-founded ski area in Duluth built in 1974, became one of the city’s principal winter recreation destinations and helped boost tourism revenue, aided by the arrival of Interstate 35. Opened in December 1974 through efforts led by former Olympian George Hovland, with support from Mayor Ben Boo and development leadership from Manley Goldfine, it is the state’s second tallest ski hill and is especially noted for its large terrain park. In the 21st century, Spirit Mountain expanded into a year-round recreation area with an alpine coaster, mountain bike trails, a new chalet and Nordic center facilities, and other attractions for summer and winter visitors.
