Vic Suhling first leased this property from Charles and Maude Modlin, built a new gas station, and erected the Vic Suhling/Gas for Less sign before purchasing the property in 1961. The business closed in 1968, but Paul Stewart then purchased it and opened Stewart's Deep Rock gas station, which operated until closing for good in 1973. In 1989, the property was sold to Yo Cho Hameric, a bar owner on the south side of Beeler Street, and she razed the building on October 19, 1990. Her plans for the lot did not materialize, and it remained vacant for the next 20 years. Martha Jackson later purchased the property to build the Litchfield Museum and Route 66 Welcome Center. Throughout the ownership changes, the neon light remained as a testament to the former businesses, and Jackson purchased it on June 14, 2011 to help connect the history of Route 66 and Litchfield. With a matching $16,000 grant from the Route 66 Association of Missouri, spearheaded by Nick Adam, the sign was refurbished, and a relighting ceremony was held on October 26, 2013.
