Watnong Mountain in Morris County, New Jersey, rises to 965 feet in Parsippany-Troy Hills Township and overlooks Morris Plains from its eastern side. Geologically, it is part of the New York–New Jersey Highlands within the Reading Prong. The mountain also figured in the Revolutionary War, when Continental Army troops used its commanding height as a lookout and signaling point over the surrounding area. A large stone staircase on the mountainside survives as a notable reminder of that military use and connects the mountain’s natural prominence with its wartime role.
