The Edward E. Hartwick Memorial Building, a historic museum building in Hartwick Pines State Park near Grayling, Michigan, grew from the park’s early development after Karen Hartwick donated land to the Michigan Department of Conservation in 1927. Built in 1929 as a memorial to Major Edward Hartwick, who was killed in action during World War I, it was later completed inside by Civilian Conservation Corps workers after the Great Depression slowed the park’s expansion. Made entirely of Michigan pine, the one-and-a-half-story rustic log structure is notable as one of the few surviving examples of the rustic log style used in Michigan state parks during the 1920s and 1930s.
