At Frogmore in South Carolina, the Sams Plantation Complex preserves one of the Lowcountry’s most substantial surviving tabby plantation landscapes. Built on and perhaps occupied before 1783, the site retains ruins or traces of at least 12 tabby structures, including the main house, kitchen, slave quarters, and a range of service and farm buildings. High tabby-walled enclosures also mark the Sams family cemetery and an Episcopal chapel, preserving evidence of family life, worship, labor, and plantation organization. During and after the American Civil War, freedmen occupied the complex. The plantation house was later destroyed by hurricanes, but the archaeological site remains a layered record of plantation society.
