In Port Huron, Michigan, the former Gratiot Railway Station, built in 1858 by the Canadian Grand Trunk Railway Company, survives as one of the city’s oldest railroad buildings. Part of an important border crossing route, it served as a major entry point for immigrants coming from Canada into the United States, with about 42,000 passing through by 1869. The depot is also tied to Thomas Edison, who lived nearby and worked there as a news butcher from 1859 to 1863. Later replaced for rail service in 1907 and converted to office use, the building now preserves Edison’s youth, early work, and related artifacts.
