Washington County set aside a memorial and memorial woods to preserve the memory of the 7900 county veterans of World War II, including the 228 who gave their lives for their country. It was dedicated on November 11, 2004. An original Washington County World War II veterans memorial, a 40-acre hemlock memorial forest, lies adjacent to the Appalachian Trail 4.5 miles southwest and was dedicated on April 21, 1945.
