On September 20, 1863, at 4:30 p.m., Deas' Brigade of Hindman's Division in Polk's Corps, under Brigadier General Zach. C. Deas, included the 19th Alabama under Colonel Samuel K. McSpadden, the 22nd Alabama under Captain Harry T. Toulmin, the 25th Alabama under Colonel George D. Johnston, the 39th Alabama under Colonel Whitfield Clark, the 50th Alabama under Colonel J.G. Coltart, the 17th Alabama Battalion Sharpshooters under Captain James F. Nabers, and Dent's Alabama Battery under Captain S.H. Dent. About 4 o'clock p.m., the brigade formed in the ravine west of the Vittetoe House on the left of Manigault's Brigade and assaulted the spur in its front. The left of the line reached that position, but the whole line was eventually driven back to the base of the hill, from which it advanced again and found that the enemy had retired.
