The Reidville Male Academy stood on this site, established in 1857 by the Rev Robert H. Reid to provide for the education of young men, and it continued to operate until 1905, when it was integrated into the public school system. Its academic excellence had national renown and attracted students from afar. Students who graduated from the institution went on to become leaders in commerce, religion, and education. The trustees of Reidville Private Schools made it possible to establish and maintain the institution through their support.
