George Armistead, born April 10, 1779, and died April 25, 1818, commanded Fort McHenry during the British fleet’s bombardment on September 13-14, 1814, in the War of 1812. The gallant defense of Fort McHenry under his command inspired the national anthem, “The Star-Spangled Banner.”
