Stone Mountain Wilderness is a federally protected wilderness in far western Virginia within the Clinch Ranger District of the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests. Encompassing 3,273 acres along the Powell River and the North Fork of the Powell River, it is the only protected wilderness in the Cumberland Mountains and was designated in 2009. Its steep ridges, deep gorges, cliffs, and comparatively undisturbed forests support rich biodiversity, including rare salamanders, many mussel species, and rare fish. The area also helps protect the Cave Springs Cave watershed and is managed for minimal human impact, with access chiefly by foot on wilderness trails.
