Founded in 1856 near the home and stage stand of Valentine Hoch on the old Austin-Indianola Road, Hochheim grew as a community center with the building of a German Methodist Church in 1864 and the opening of a post office in 1869. The county's first Protestant church, organized in 1841 on Cuero Creek by J.M. Baker and James N. Smith, moved there in 1882 as Hochheim Presbyterian Church, and a Baptist church was founded later in 1923. Concrete Lodge No. 182, A.F. & A.M., chartered in 1856 with F.J. Lynch as first Worshipful Master, became Hochheim Lodge in 1884 and bought the upper story of the schoolhouse in 1885 for a lodge hall, then bought the lower story in 1921, housing the school there until 1938.
