Balmorhea State Park in far West Texas centers on San Solomon Springs and is renowned for its vast spring-fed swimming pool, an oasis-like freshwater basin that supports swimming, snorkeling, and scuba diving year-round. Developed during the Great Depression after the Texas State Parks Board acquired the site in 1934, the pool and related buildings were constructed by Civilian Conservation Corps Company 1856 and the area entered the state park system in 1968. Since 1995, restoration of a lost desert wetland has expanded the park’s ecological role by providing habitat for endangered fish and other wildlife. After closures beginning in 2018, repairs, restoration, and expansion returned the full park to operation by 2026.
