Noah Webster created America’s first dictionary and promoted a single, distinctly American way to spell words, such as “logic” instead of “logick.” Built in 1823 in New Haven, Connecticut, this home was intended for his retirement, but he continued working on his publications here for many years. He lived here with his wife, two daughters, and at least one free African-American servant. Webster wrote many of his works here, including his American Dictionary of the English Language, which was published in 1828 and contained more than 70,000 word entries.
