Abby O’Bryan, a Girl Scout with Troop 1033 in Alpena, proposed the idea of a dog park to a member of the City Council and began the planning process. In the early stages, she met others who shared her interest, including Alisha Manning, who shared her love of dogs and support for the park. With help from the community, Abby, Alisha, and many dedicated supporters determined the park’s location and design and began fundraising through special events, a crowd funding campaign, grants, and generous contributions from members of the Alpena community. Abby wanted to create a place where her dog Sasha and other dogs could safely play off the leash. She used the project to achieve her Girl Scout Silver Award. Although Sasha was never able to use the dog park because of illness, Abby dedicated her work on the park to Sasha’s memory.
