The UH-1 Iroquois, nicknamed Huey, was a straightforward single-engine helicopter with a crew of two pilots and a crew chief or door gunner. In combat, it flew three distinct missions as slicks for troop transport, gunships as armed battle helicopters, and dust-offs for medical evacuation. Second generation Hueys were bigger and more powerful, designed for rapid simultaneous entry from both sides of a larger-volume cabin. Increased in size by approximately 12 percent, the UH-1N was a significant improvement to a design already proving itself in combat. With the arrival of this second generation, the Huey proved itself as the most versatile and best-known helicopter of all time, and with aircraft still serving in large numbers around the world, many are finding their way onto the second hand civilian market.
