In the late 1870's, early settlers followed the original wagon route along the Old Grade, which served for many years as the main road to and from Wessington Springs until present Highway 34 was built. The original road ran on the north side of the draw and tended to fill with snow in winter, so it was moved to the south side of the draw. Water running down the old road exposed tree roots there.
