The United States Air Force Academy Cadet Chapel, completed in 1962 north of Colorado Springs, became one of the academy’s most recognizable buildings and later a landmark of modernist architecture. Designed by Walter Netsch, its striking form uses seventeen spires, a tubular steel frame of identical tetrahedrons, aluminum panels, and colored glass. Planned to unite multiple worship spaces under one roof, it contains Protestant, Catholic, Jewish, Buddhist, Islamic, and other all-faiths areas arranged so services can occur simultaneously. Honored by the American Institute of Architects and included in a U.S. National Historic Landmark area, it closed in 2019 for a major renovation to correct long-standing water damage.
