Built in 1893 by the local Odd Fellows, this commercial building originally matched the one immediately south and combined rented business space on its lower floors with meeting halls for the organization above. Its façade was remodeled in 1903 and again in 1930 after fires destroyed much of the building, including the third floor; the 1930 fire was so intense that it ignited a lumber yard one block south on Clinton Street, set the roof of the T. B. Perry House two blocks west on fire, and spread ashes throughout the town. Though its façade is later than many similar buildings in the district, it blends well with them, and its cast concrete panels, cast concrete jack-arched lintels, and varied brick textures and colors give it a Neo-classical appearance. The building housed a variety of businesses and was best known as the home of the Strasburger and Verveer Department Store from 1900 into the Depression days, occupying two full floors.
