History

American Indians have harvested salmon from the Columbia River for over 10,000 years. Celilo Falls, a sacred location, now lies beneath the waters of the Columbia, directly east of the railroad bridge below. The loss of this fishery at Celilo Falls was paid for with a cash settlement of $26,000,000 so The Dalles Dam could flood and silence the falls in 1957. Bereft of their ancestral fishery and gathering places, local Indians are awaiting enactment of Public Law 100-581, passed in 1988, which will provide 26 fishing access sites between Bonneville and McNary Dams. This helps guarantee the way of life for the Indian fisher.
