In Southeast Asia, Major Bill Adams '60 flew a Huey (UH-1) helicopter similar to this with the A/227th Assault Helicopter Company in Kostum Province, Vietnam. On May 25, 1971, he volunteered to attempt a rescue of wounded personnel, flew in, picked up survivors, and flew out under heavy fire. His Huey was hit repeatedly and exploded in midair, killing all aboard. For valor above and beyond the call of duty, Major Adams was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor. Also remembered are those who fought and died: Dale R. Buis '42, the first American killed in Vietnam, Curtis J. Steckbauer '51, Joe D. Helvey '53, Lee D. Anderson '58, William E. Adams '60, Richard E. Holzer '64, Daniel O Abernathy '65, Ted R. Leighton '65, Ronald C. Samuelson '65, Larry J. Kluever '68, and Frank D. Schrader '68.
