Founded from teaching collections that began at the German-English Academy in 1851, the Milwaukee Public Museum became a free public museum after legislation backed by alderman August Stirn. Opened to the public in 1884, it grew into Wisconsin’s most visited museum, with more than 4 million artifacts spanning natural science, anthropology, and history. Its development was shaped by directors including Carl Doerflinger, Henry L. Ward, and Samuel A. Barrett, and by milestones such as Carl Akeley’s 1890 habitat diorama and the 1965 Streets of Old Milwaukee exhibit. After decades of governance and financial turmoil, the museum began moving toward a new Haymarket facility and a new name, the Nature & Culture Museum of Wisconsin.
