Late on the afternoon of June 1, 1864, Col. Elisha Strong Kellogg led the 2nd Connecticut Volunteer Heavy Artillery in an attack across this ground against Confederate entrenchments to the west alongside other Federal troops from the Sixth and Eighteenth Corps. He advanced 1500 men in three battalions with weapons at port arms. The combined Union attacks captured approximately 300 prisoners, but Maj. Gen. Robert F. Hoke’s Confederate division stopped further progress with a withering fire from the left flank. Kellogg was killed at the head of the first battalion in front of the abattis and breastworks held by Brig. Gen. Thomas L. Clingman’s brigade. The regiment’s remaining men regrouped under Col. Emory Upton and helped capture the Confederate line at sunset, though more than 330 of them were killed and wounded in the attacks. A unit that began the day raw and inexperienced earned hard distinction at Cold Harbor, where Col. Elisha S. Kellogg, commanding, was among those killed or mortally wounded between June 1 and 12, 1864.
