Neahkahnie Mountain is a coastal headland on the Oregon Coast north of Manzanita, rising above U.S. Route 101 at one of the highway’s highest passes in Oregon. Its Tillamook-derived name has uncertain meaning, often given as “the place of the god.” Native Americans long burned its slopes to improve forage for deer and elk, and pioneers later did the same for livestock, though the practice had ended by at least 1990. The mountain became famous for a treasure legend traced to the mid-1800s, reinforced by reported inscribed stones, beeswax washed ashore, and research suggesting a nearby Spanish galleon wreck from 1693.
