In Chesterfield village of Montville, Connecticut, this site preserves the remains of a small Jewish farming community established in the 1890s as part of an effort to help Jews fleeing Eastern European pogroms build new lives in the United States. Supported by Baron de Hirsch, many settlers came from Brooklyn, formed Society Agudas Achim in 1890, built a synagogue in 1892, and organized a cooperative creamery that operated for about twenty years using power from Powers Brook. Fire in 1950 and arson in 1975 destroyed the principal buildings, but archaeological remains survive as evidence of one of Connecticut’s earliest rural Jewish settlements.
