Fort St. Leon was designed by De Verges and garrisoned in 1754, but abandoned in 1792; because of its strategic value, it was rebuilt by Latour in 1808 and garrisoned to defend New Orleans, then destroyed by Adm. Farragut during the Civil War in an advance up the river.
