On September 14, 1914, the park at Thacher Point was formally dedicated in memory of John Boyd Thacher after his widow, Emma Treadwell Thacher, donated 350 acres to the state of New York to be preserved as a public park. The Thachers, whose summer home was nearby, deeply appreciated the area's scenic beauty. In 1906 and 1907, John B. Thacher purchased several adjacent farms along the cliff to protect the area from development when limestone was becoming a valuable building material. Through his foresight and actions, the natural resource was preserved for future generations as a place for recreation, historical inspiration, and geological study.
