Rocky Mount was the home of pioneer William Cobb, located 300 yards to the southeast. It served as the first seat of government of the Southwest Territory beginning October 10, 1790, and Governor William Blount had his headquarters here until the government moved to Knoxville, the new capital, in 1792. Andrew Jackson lived here for six weeks while waiting for a license to practice law.
