Belmont Mound State Park in southwestern Wisconsin centers on a hill rising about 400 feet, an isolated outlier of the Niagara Escarpment in the unglaciated Driftless Area. Its French-derived name means “beautiful mountain.” The park is unusual in being managed by the Belmont Lions Club rather than the state natural resources agency, and part of it received additional protection in 1981 as Belmont Mound Woods State Natural Area. The site also lies beside the First Capitol Historic Site, where the Wisconsin Territory Legislature first met on October 25, 1836. A former observation tower, long associated with the mound, was removed after repeated misuse and suicides, with dismantling completed in fall 2021.
