St. John Neumann was the first male American saint, canonized in 1977. Born in 1811 in Bohemia, he came to the U.S. in 1836. A devoted Redemptorist priest, he became the fourth Bishop of Philadelphia in 1852 and established the nation's first Catholic diocesan school system. He died in 1860.
