In 1764, Mason and Dixon erected the Star-Gazers’ Stone while locating the Pennsylvania-Maryland Boundary Line at a point 15 miles north of it and 31 miles due west of Philadelphia. At this place they also measured a degree of latitude on the earth’s surface southward and made other astronomical observations, giving the stone its name.
